“A lot of people were saying we’re here to vote for the zoo,” Kagansaid.
Kagan said the millage is crucial to keeping the financiallytroubled zoo afloat.
The tax, which is to cost the owner of a 0,000 home about per year, will generate almost million a year toward the zoo’s-million annual budget. The rest comes from admissions,concessions and donations.
The 0.1-mill tax will appear on December bills.

The city still owns the zoo and all its assets, and pays about .2million annually for insurance and security costs, said GailWarden, chairman of the Zoological Society.
The state Legislature appropriated million in fiscal 2007 tohelp the zoo while it sought a millage. The zoo draws almost 1million visitors a year.
Most zoos around the county receive public support, including theToledo Zoo, which levies 1.85 mills for operations and capitalimprovements. That tax is limited to one county, while the DetroitZoo’s tax will be levied in three counties .
